What should have been a day of joyful anticipation turned into a bloody fight for survival on the streets of Tacoma, Washington, when a heavily pregnant mother was savagely attacked by two loose dogs on her exact due date.
The violence of the assault forced a team of trauma doctors to immediately induce labor to save both mother and child. While the newborn miraculously entered the world entirely unharmed, his mother, Renee Wilson, now faces a grueling, agonizing road to recovery. Confined to a hospital bed, she is fighting off raging infections and undergoing intensive physical therapy to regain the use of her legs.
A Parking Lot Ambush on a Due Date
The nightmare unfolded at approximately 11 a.m. on June 25. According to an official statement from the Tacoma Police Department, Wilson was walking through a local parking lot when she was suddenly ambushed by two large, unrestrained dogs.
Chilling surveillance footage captured the terrifying final seconds before the impact, showing the expectant mother desperately attempting to wave off and chase the approaching animals. Her efforts were futile. The dogs quickly overpowered her, violently slamming her to the asphalt. Once she was pinned to the ground, the animals launched into a relentless assault, biting her multiple times across her body.
Emergency responders rushed Wilson to a nearby hospital in stable condition, but the sheer physical trauma of the bites and the fall threw her pregnancy into an immediate medical crisis.
“I don’t know who the owners are of the dogs, but I could have lost my life, and so could my son,” Wilson told FOX 13 Seattle, holding back tears as she recalled the sheer terror of the attack. “And then I have three other children that need me, so it’s just an unfortunate, messed-up situation.”
The Bittersweet Arrival and a Crippling Recovery
Fearing that the immense stress and physical damage to Wilson’s body would compromise the unborn child, physicians made the critical executive decision to induce labor right then and there.
The medical gamble paid off: Wilson successfully delivered a healthy baby boy. Yet, the traditional bliss of bringing home a newborn has been entirely eclipsed by a punishing medical reality. The deep puncture wounds inflicted by the dogs have left Wilson battling a cascade of severe infections. Furthermore, the nerve and muscle damage to her lower body has left her completely unable to move one of her legs.
The long-term impact on the family is staggering. A GoFundMe campaign, launched by Wilson’s relatives to shield the family from catastrophic medical debt, highlights the daunting operational hurdles awaiting the family once she is discharged.
“My sister cannot walk, and will need consistent help and home care, especially with a newborn baby,” the family shared on the fundraising page, noting that the physical layout of managing an infant while paralyzed is an overwhelming prospect.

Reckoning for the Owners and the Animals
In the immediate aftermath of the mauling, Tacoma Animal Control officers moved in to contain the threat. The two animals involved—identified by authorities as an American Pit Bull Terrier and an American Bully—were safely secured and transported to a municipal impound facility.
While police confirmed that the dogs’ owners have been fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation, the fate of the animals appears largely sealed. Tacoma Animal Control Officer Brittany Kirsch confirmed that both dogs have already been legally classified as “dangerous,” and the city intends to seek humane euthanasia.
Per standard protocol, the animals are currently undergoing a mandatory 10-day quarantine period. Once the investigation concludes, the owners retain the legal right to request a formal court hearing to contest the euthanasia order.
However, the legal consequences for the owners extend beyond the loss of their pets. Tacoma police stated that the individuals could face criminal misdemeanor charges for an animal injuring a human, alongside a sweeping array of local citations.
As the legal machinery grinds forward to hold the owners accountable, Wilson remains focused entirely on the sterile walls of her rehab room, trying to take her very first steps so she can return home to the four children who need her.
