Editor’s Note: This is a retrospective look at a social media moment that originally went viral in May 2020, capturing the hilarious, unpredictable, and sometimes far-too-revealing nature of the internet age.
In the age of social media, capturing the perfect bathroom selfie is practically an art form. You find the right angle, adjust the lighting, throw on your favorite accessories, and share it with the world. But as one young woman learned the hard way, the digital spotlight can be a double-edged sword—especially when the background of your photo harbors a secret you never intended to broadcast.
Shannan Butt, a 22-year-old, thought she had nailed the aesthetic. Dressed in a casual cap and stylish sunglasses, she snapped what she believed was a flawless bathroom selfie and promptly uploaded it to Instagram for her followers to admire.
For 37 minutes, the picture sat on her profile, gathering likes and views. But when Shannan took a closer look at her masterpiece, her heart dropped.
Framed perfectly in the reflection of the mirror behind her was her boyfriend, Harry. And Harry was in the middle of a deeply private, distinctly unglamorous moment: he was actively wiping his backside on the toilet.

The 37-Minute Window
The realization was as sudden as it was mortifying. In her rush to post the cute outfit selfie, Shannan had completely missed the mirror’s angle, which bypassed her silhouette to capture a crystal-clear reflection of Harry’s bathroom routine.
Panicked, she immediately deleted the post from Instagram. But once the initial shock wore off, the sheer absurdity of the situation set in. She shared the mishap with her closest friends, and their reaction was unanimous—this was simply too funny to keep a secret.
With her friends coaxing her to share the blunder, Shannan took the story to Twitter, presenting her embarrassment to the public with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor.
“As if I had this photo up on my insta for 37 minutes before noticing that my boyfriend is literally WIPING HIS ARSE in the mirror behind me, sound asf x,” she tweeted.
A Great Debate is Sparked
The internet did what the internet does best: it turned a minor domestic blunder into a viral sensation. Shannan’s tweet exploded, racking up hundreds of comments and accumulating over 125,000 likes.
Yet, while some users merely laughed at the misfortune of the photo, others bypassed the comedy of the reflection entirely to focus on a much more controversial revelation: Harry’s wiping technique.
Because of the posture captured in the mirror, the post unwittingly thrust Harry into the center of one of the internet’s most fiercely debated household mysteries—the battle between standing and sitting.
The comment section quickly split into factions, analyzing Harry’s stance with humorous intensity:
-
The Skeptics: “Why is he stood up? What kind of person does that?!” one bewildered user questioned.
-
The Supporters: Another user took a more appreciative stance, tweeting, “Stand up wiper, respect.”

The Story Behind the Snapshot
Reflecting on the hilarious chain of events, Shannan recalled the moment she first spotted the background intruder.
“I was with my friend and we both immediately started crying laughing [when we noticed it] and I was like omg I need to delete it,” Shannan explained. “Then I mentioned it in the group chat and my friend was like, ‘You have to put that on Twitter, it will be hilarious.'”
As for how the photo even came to be, it turned out to be a classic case of domestic miscommunication. Shannan had claimed the bathroom mirror first, but Harry slipped in to use the facilities while she was in mid-pose.
“I was in [the bathroom] first and he came in and I was like, ‘babe I’m taking a picture’, and he just carried on,” Shannan said. “So, I just took the picture without thinking anything of it and left.”
Ultimately, Shannan’s deleted selfie proved a timeless truth of the digital era: sometimes, the mistakes we try hardest to erase end up being the very things that bring the whole world together for a good, honest laugh.
