The sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere at the age of 36 has taken another heartbreaking turn after new details emerged from the residence where she was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina.
Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, was discovered at a residence on Sunday afternoon. Emergency crews were called at approximately 1:50 p.m. following a report of an unidentified woman experiencing cardiac arrest.
Within minutes, CPR was reportedly already underway.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.
Now, a new piece of information reportedly discovered inside the residence has added another layer to the questions surrounding her death.
However, it is important to make one distinction clear: the new evidence has not officially confirmed the cause of death. Authorities are still waiting for the completion of additional studies before making a final determination.
CPR Was Already Underway When Help Arrived
According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by Page Six, emergency personnel were called to the residence after Panettiere was reported to be in cardiac arrest.
The emergency response quickly turned into a desperate attempt to save her life.
CPR was reportedly already being performed within minutes of the call, with responders continuing chest compressions and providing advanced cardiac life support after arriving at the scene.
But despite those efforts, Panettiere could not be revived.
She was pronounced dead at the residence.
The circumstances surrounding her death immediately prompted questions, particularly because reports based on the dispatch information suggested that an overdose could have been involved.
Still, officials have not confirmed that an overdose was the cause of death.
Coroner Says the Cause of Death Is Still Pending
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has urged caution while the investigation continues.
On August 17, Coroner Mike Ellis said that an autopsy had been conducted but that no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to Panettiere’s death.
“The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies,” Ellis said.
He also emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
That means investigators are still waiting for additional information before they can determine exactly what caused Panettiere’s death.
The absence of trauma does not, by itself, establish what happened medically. Additional examinations and testing are necessary before authorities can provide a definitive explanation.
For that reason, reports about an overdose remain unconfirmed until the coroner releases an official determination.
Neighbors Describe a Disturbing Scene
In the aftermath of the emergency, residents living at the apartment complex began noticing the unusual activity surrounding the property.
Micah Lee, a tenant at Judson Mill Lofts, told WYFF that the building’s hollow hallways allow sounds to travel easily.
“The halls are pretty hollow, so noise echoes throughout,” Lee said.
He explained that he heard people talking about someone collapsing and later heard references to cardiac arrest.
But Lee was careful to make clear that he could not personally confirm what had happened.
“I can’t confirm any of that. That’s just what I’ve heard,” he said.
Another resident, who spoke anonymously with Page Six, said they had not even known Panettiere was living in the complex.
The neighbor described the news as particularly unsettling because of the actress’s prominence.
“It’s still kind of jarring to hear that someone of her stature was here and then that tragically happened to her,” the neighbor said.
According to the resident, police were at the complex for several hours, from around noon until approximately 8 p.m.
The arrival of the coroner’s vehicle made it clear to residents that someone had died.
“The coroner vehicle showed up and, of course, I knew then that there was a death,” the neighbor said.
The next morning, the resident learned the identity of the woman who had died.
It was Hayden Panettiere.
The revelation was, by the neighbor’s account, difficult to comprehend.
A Device Used to Administer Narcan Was Reportedly Found
Now, another detail has emerged.
According to TMZ, a device used to administer Narcan was reportedly discovered inside the residence where Panettiere died.
Narcan is a brand of naloxone, a medication commonly used to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Sources reportedly told TMZ that the device was found on a mattress inside the apartment.
But even this discovery does not definitively establish what happened.
It is not currently known whether Panettiere received the medication, whether it was administered to another person, or why it was present at the residence.
That distinction is critical.
The presence of Narcan may raise questions about a possible opioid-related emergency, but it does not, on its own, prove that Panettiere died from an overdose.
Only the official investigation and medical findings can establish that.
