Earthquake expert who warned before deadly Colombia quake says California is ‘super overdue’ for major event

When a geophysicist who correctly flagged elevated seismic risks ahead of Colombia’s recent catastrophic tremor turns his attention to the West Coast, people tend to listen. Geologist Stefan Burns is now raising the alarm over California, warning that recent powerful quakes across South America may be signaling a dangerous buildup of stress along the Pacific Rim—leaving the Golden State, in his view, “super overdue” for a major seismic event.

Burns’s heightened concern follows a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that tore through Colombia, an event preceded by two powerful temblors that shook Venezuela earlier this year.

Having previously suggested that the unusual activity in Venezuela could trigger a domino effect along connected tectonic boundaries, Burns points to the subsequent Colombian disaster as a sobering example of why California cannot afford to be complacent.

While he is quick to clarify that earthquake forecasting remains an imprecise discipline and that a catastrophic quake is never a absolute certainty on a fixed calendar, he believes the current geological conditions warrant serious vigilance.

“All of California Is Problematic Right Now”

Breaking down his analysis during a recent YouTube livestream, Burns highlighted Southern California as a region of particular concern due to its labyrinth of interconnected fault lines and heavy structural concentration.

“California is super overdue,” Burns stated during the broadcast, elaborating on the broader regional threat. “In general, just all of California, but really more Southern California would be at greater risk because of this.”

According to Burns, the critical window of heightened vulnerability isn’t necessarily a matter of days or weeks, but could span up to a full year following major international events.

“It’s that six-month-to-one-year time frame that we’re worried about,” he explained, noting that if the region manages to navigate that timeframe without a major rupture, stress levels may temporarily stabilize.

However, he cautioned against focusing exclusively on the south. Swarms of smaller temblors and shifting stress dynamics in Northern California mean the entire state remains on shaky ground.

“So really, all of California is problematic right now,” Burns warned.

Can Quakes Thousands of Miles Away Trigger the Golden State?

The core of Burns’s theory rests on the concept of regional stress transfer—the idea that massive releases of kinetic energy during severe earthquakes can send subtle gravitational and tectonic ripples across thousands of miles, redistributing pressure along distant fault systems.

To bolster his argument, Burns points to historical precedent across the Americas, where clusters of major seismic events appeared to ripple along the continent’s western spine within relatively tight timeframes.

Still, mainstream seismology maintains a cautious stance. While researchers recognize that massive quakes can trigger secondary localized tremors, predicting the exact date, time, and epicenter of a future earthquake remains beyond the reach of modern science. Experts can map out fault lines and calculate long-term probabilities, but no instrument exists that can pinpoint when a specific fault will finally snap.

Burns himself openly acknowledged these limitations to his viewers: “This is not an exact science.”

Uncertainty aside, the threat of a catastrophic rupture is something Californians have lived with for generations. The state sits atop the infamous San Andreas Fault system, a massive tectonic boundary capable of unleashing some of the most destructive earthquakes in North American history.

Renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones has previously modeled the harrowing potential impact of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake striking the southern stretch of the San Andreas. Such a scenario would unleash minutes of violent ground displacement, causing widespread collapse of older infrastructure, severing critical transportation arteries, and shutting down water and power grids across Southern California for weeks or even months.

While scientists continuously debate whether distant South American quakes act as an immediate fuse for North American faults, they unanimously agree on one fundamental truth: on a geological timescale, California’s next massive earthquake is not a matter of if, but when.
