A Father’s Ultimate Gift: How a New Jersey Dad Saved His Daughter After Tragic Loss
For Karen Rodas and Paul Rybkin, the joy of welcoming a newborn into the world was once eclipsed by unimaginable heartbreak.
When their son, Nathaniel, was born, his life was tragically cut short after just 36 hours. He succumbed to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)—a rare genetic condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to multiply within the kidneys, ultimately driving the organs toward total failure.
When the New Jersey couple welcomed their daughter, Maddy, in 2013, lightning struck twice: doctors confirmed she shared the very same life-threatening diagnosis as her big brother. What followed was a grueling two-year battle for survival—one that would ultimately end not in tragedy, but in an extraordinary act of paternal devotion.
A Toddler’s Fight for Life
From her earliest days, Maddy faced an uphill battle. The progressive disease caused her abdomen to swell significantly, forcing her in and out of hospital wards for the first 18 months of her life.
Despite the constant parade of feeding tubes, oxygen treatments, and medical monitoring, the resilient toddler managed to hold her own—until her health took a sudden, alarming turn for the worse.

“With Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious souls, going under the knife, my nerves were a wreck,” Karen recalled.
Fortunately, the complex surgical procedure was a resounding success. Paul’s donated kidney immediately went to work inside his daughter’s tiny frame, sparking a dramatic transformation almost overnight.
“Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl,” Karen shared with joy. “Now, she has boundless energy. Her massive tummy now just looks a little bit rounded, and she is a happy and healthy two-year-old.”
A Rollercoaster Ride to Recovery
Reflecting on the life-saving sacrifice, Paul remained modest about his decision to step up as a donor, viewing it simply as a duty of fatherhood.
“We have been on a rollercoaster – but any father would have done what I did, donating my kidney to Maddy. It’s part of being a parent,” Paul expressed. “Now we are on a high and can watch Maddy grow up as a happy and healthy little girl.”
Because pediatric kidney transplants do not last indefinitely, doctors have noted that Maddy will likely require another transplant in roughly 25 years. But for parents who once faced the real possibility of losing their daughter as a toddler, two and a half decades feels like a lifetime away.

In the years following the surgery, the family launched the Facebook page “A Kidney For Madeline,” where Karen has documented her daughter’s incredible milestones—from celebrating her preschool graduation to blowing out candles on her ninth birthday.
