20-Year-Old Son Dies While Trying to Save Father at Beach After Both Struggled in ‘Uncontrollable Rip Currents’

What was meant to be a peaceful family vacation on the coastal shores of North Carolina turned into an unimaginable tragedy when a father and his 20-year-old son lost their lives in the churning ocean waters off Holden Beach.

Daniel Roberts, 46, and his son Dylan Roberts, 20, both drowned on August 2 after being swept away by powerful, uncontrollable rip currents. According to family friends and local authorities, the afternoon took a catastrophic turn when Daniel began struggling in the tide—prompting his son to plunge into the surf without a second thought in a desperate, courageous attempt to save his father’s life.

Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West following frantic calls for help. Rescuers from the Holden Beach Police Department, along with local fire and EMS crews, pulled both men from the water and immediately initiated advanced life-support measures. Despite their exhaustive efforts, neither man could be revived, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

“In the Blink of an Eye”

Justin Davis, a close friend of the Roberts family, described how rapidly a routine day at the beach transformed into a scene of absolute devastation.

“In the blink of an eye, they were in uncontrollable rip currents,” Davis recalled. Based on accounts from those present, Daniel was caught in the sweeping undertow first. Spotting his father in visible distress, Dylan sprinted into the treacherous water to pull him to safety, only to be overwhelmed by the same relentless force.

In an official statement released following the tragedy, Holden Beach Police Chief Steve Barger expressed the community’s collective sorrow over the double fatal drowning. “The Town of Holden Beach extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time,” Chief Barger stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic loss.”

A Hero’s Sacrifice and a Heartbroken Bride

For those who knew Dylan Roberts, his decision to rush into danger to save his father was entirely in character. The 20-year-old had recently married his high school sweetheart, Maggie Day, and was building a life centered on hard work, devotion, and family.

Following the tragedy, Day took to social media to share a poignant, heart-wrenching tribute to the two most important men in her life, expressing the profound shock of losing both her husband and her father-in-law in a single afternoon.

“I woke up just hurting for you and your dad,” Day wrote in an emotional message. “You guys didn’t deserve this. I’ve never had a good outlook on men, but your father always welcomed me as his own. You guys were a lot alike. You both were so extremely selfless and courageous. I can’t believe we lost both of you, I’m still in such shock.”

Remembering her father-in-law, Day recalled Daniel as a warm, vibrant presence who “lit up every room he entered” and was always ready with “the funniest, but also cringiest dad jokes.”

Turning her words to her young husband, she reflected on the deep comfort and unwavering support he provided throughout their relationship. “My sweet boy, you were such a kind and funny soul,” she wrote. “You always made me laugh and always knew how to comfort me when I didn’t even know I needed it… Thank you for taking care of me, always providing and being so hardworking.”

Rallying Support for a Shattered Family

To help the grieving family navigate the overwhelming emotional and financial burdens left in the wake of the double loss, Davis established an online GoFundMe campaign. In the fundraiser’s description, he memorialized Dylan’s final, selfless act.

“In his father’s moment of greatest need, Dylan acted without hesitation, courageously entering the water and ultimately giving his own life while trying to save him,” Davis wrote. “His final act was one of extraordinary bravery, selflessness, and love—Dylan died a hero.”

As the surviving family members—including Dylan’s young widow—begin the agonizing process of rebuilding their lives, the surrounding community has rallied around them. Within days of its creation, the memorial fundraiser raised tens of thousands of dollars to assist with upcoming expenses and alleviate the financial strain on a family forever altered by a sudden, heartbreaking act of heroism.
