Music Teacher Allegedly Lured Sister-in-Law With Piano Before Brutal Attack

A quiet suburban neighborhood on Long Island has been thrust into the center of a horrific criminal investigation after a beloved local music teacher allegedly acted on a twisted, decade-long obsession. Authorities say the educator lured his 25-year-old sister-in-law to her death under the pretense of moving a piano, brutally attacking and sexually assaulting her while his wife was away on a bachelorette trip.

The tragedy unfolded inside the shared multi-family residence where 27-year-old Joseph Horner lived above the victim, Victoria Castle, in Nassau County. What began as a mundane domestic request culminated in a violent assault that ended a young woman’s life and shattered an entire family.

A Premeditated Trap Under the Guise of Music

According to prosecutors from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Horner—a seemingly upstanding music teacher employed by the Oceanside School District—had harbored a dark, obsessive fascination with Castle since 2016, the very year he met his future wife.

The opportunity to act on that fixation arrived when Horner’s wife left town for the weekend. According to the arraignment proceedings, Horner devised a ruse, asking Castle to step upstairs into his second-floor apartment to help him shift a piano.

The moment she entered the unit to assist him, the trap snapped shut. Prosecutors allege that Horner ambushed Castle from behind, violently locking her in a chokehold until she lost consciousness. With the victim rendered helpless, Horner removed her clothing and sexually assaulted her, the DA’s office stated.

A Confession at the Scene

The brutal sequence of events concluded on Monday morning when Horner himself dialed 911 at approximately 8:45 a.m., summoning authorities to the residence.

According to law enforcement officials, responding officers from the Nassau County Police Department were met by a compliant suspect. Prosecutors revealed that Horner immediately confessed to the responding officers on the scene, admitting that he had choked his sister-in-law until she went limp before having sex with her.

Emergency medical personnel rushed Castle to a nearby hospital in a desperate bid to save her life. However, the damage inflicted during the strangulation proved too severe, and she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Horner was immediately arrested at the scene of the crime.

The Contrast of a “Beloved” Reputation

Horner currently faces a charge of second-degree murder and is being held behind bars without bail. Given his statements to police at the scene, prosecutors have indicated that additional charges stemming from the sexual assault are actively pending. Despite his initial admissions to arriving officers, Horner entered a plea of not guilty during his formal arraignment.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local academic community. In an official communication sent to News 12 Long Island, the superintendent of the Oceanside School District confirmed that the district has swiftly placed Horner on administrative leave pending the outcome of the legal process.

Outside the courtroom, defense attorney Gregory Grizopoulos spoke to the media about the jarring disconnect between the monstrous allegations and the man the community thought they knew.

“These are very serious and disturbing allegations, and there’s a very stark contrast between the allegations and his beloved reputation that he had as a teacher, with both his students and fellow teachers,” Grizopoulos stated.

The defense counsel emphasized the immense, dual grief now bearing down on the relatives, who are simultaneously mourning a murdered daughter while grappling with the arrest of a son. “His family is devastated by the loss of their family member, Victoria, as well as the allegations against their son, Joe. We’ll continue to evaluate the evidence as more details are disclosed to us.”
