In a world that constantly pushes for individuality, Bill and John Bowdler have spent nearly a century proving that two heads, one house, and a matching wardrobe are far better than going it alone.
The 82-year-old brothers from Birmingham, England, have lived a life defined by an extraordinary, lifelong symmetry. According to the BBC, the duo has shared the exact same roof since the day they were born. But their mirrors don’t stop at the front door. They wear identical outfits every single day, cheer for the exact same soccer club—Aston Villa—and spent their entire professional careers working side by side.
Recently, that lifelong synchronicity extended into a place neither brother quite expected: the operating room. The twins recently walked into a local medical clinic together to undergo identical cataract surgeries on their right eyes.
“We’ve always been identical in most things we do, so I suppose it seemed natural to us that when one of us needed cataract surgery, the other would as well,” John told local outlet Birmingham Live.
Medical staff at the Newmedica Birmingham clinic admitted they were “quite surprised” when the lookalike octogenarians strolled in for their double appointment.
A Shared Clockwork: 1960 to the Present Day
To understand how two lives can remain so perfectly intertwined, you have to look back to the summer of 1960. Bill and John finished school on a Friday. By the following Monday morning, they had both walked through the doors of the same local wholesale distribution business to start their first jobs.
They stayed at that company for 32 years until it closed its doors. Undeterred, the brothers retrained together to become mailmen, spending the next 17 years walking neighboring postal routes for the Royal Mail.
Decades of shared routines have turned their mornings into a beautifully synchronized ritual. The rule is simple: whoever wakes up first chooses the outfit for the day. Once the wardrobe is set, they sit down together for the exact same breakfast: coffee and toast.
Only Two Separations in a Century
In over eight decades on this planet, Bill and John have only been forced apart on two fleeting occasions. The first happened during their grade school years when a teacher placed them in different classrooms. The second—and far more grueling—stretch occurred in adulthood when John was hospitalized for three months following an appendectomy.
Beyond those two brief blips, they have been an inseparable team.
Their unique bond left a lasting impression on the medical team tasked with restoring their vision. Professor Sai Kolli, a doctor at the clinic, described the siblings to the BBC as “wonderful patients.”
“They’re the first twins we’ve had as patients here, and it must be such a rare occurrence to have them both have the same procedure on the same eyes,” Professor Kolli noted.
With their right eyes now successfully treated, the Bowdler brothers are already looking ahead to their next joint venture. According to Birmingham Live, the twins are already planning a return trip to the clinic in the near future—this time, to get the cataracts removed from their left eyes, together.
